April 2008
Happy Birthday
As my family, nurses and docs declared March 4th, 2008, Day 0 of a transplant is your
new "birthday". As you all are aware, my leukemia (ALL) was best treated with a bone
marrow transplant, notably called an allogeneic myeloablative BMT.
My post-transplant stay in the hospital went well and I was released on Day #20. It was a
roller coaster of rides, but blessings were everywhere as Laura and I walked through each
day. After being discharged to our nearby rented apartment, I am required to visit the
ITA/BMT clinic each day for careful follow up. It is expected that I will be able to return
to San Luis Obispo after approximately 100 days in Palo Alto. As I journey through this
process, I begin to realize 100 days is not over reacting. With Stanford's extensive
experience and my personal day to day observations, healing is steady, careful, and
sometimes painful but does require patience and daily prayer.
I realize that despite our fast moving society, healing is day to day and cannot be rushed,
planned or fast forwarded. "Be still and know that I am God" states it so simply and
eloquently.
I want to end by thanking Roberto Hassey and the Team O'Neil volunteers for organizing
the Rally for Rich tennis mixer. I also want to thank the Corporate Sponsors in my
update. Excuse me if I have left anyone out and please continue to support them with
your patronage.
